Some Bulldogs Make It South, Others See Regattas Cancelled Due to Storm

CHARLESTON, S.C. – With a massive storm rolling through the east coast, the events hosted up the east coast have been mostly cancelled, or teams have been allowed to drop as very little racing was planned. The Yale sailors competing in the Camel Team Race will be taking the weekend off. Luckily, the group going to South Carolina for the Bob Bavier team race have made it despite many flights being cancelled including those of the teams from Boston that were planning on arriving Friday.

For the sailors that made it down south, a very breezy forecast awaits them at their first event of the season. In warmer weathers and a different venue than many NEISA venues, the team hopes to use this event as a starting point, to discover the strengths and weaknesses of the team before spring break, where they will be able to focus on either with the help of some alumni. The planned practice was cancelled on Friday, and the report time for racing on Saturday has been pushed back as well in anticipation of storm-like weather. However, racing will still likely be held and the first chance for many teams to prove themselves in team racing will be had.

Sailing this weekend for the Bulldogs will be skippers senior Malcolm Lamphere, juniors Nick Hernandez and Nic Baird, and first-year Shawn Harvey. Crewing are senior KB Knapp, junior Graceann Nicolosi, and first-year Sonia Lingos-Utley. The skippers will be rotating throughout the event as only three sail at a time. Additionally, due to the windy forecast, there is a chance that Harvey and Baird will see some time in the front of the boat as well.

Northerly wind will make for a somewhat shifty venue, if the event takes place on Crab Bank. The team will be trying to assess itself in its team racing capacity, while also focusing on perfecting boat handling as they continue to warm up in this early season event.
