Bulldogs Face Light Conditions on Second Weekend

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Extremely light wind conditions throughout the weekend made for difficult sailing conditions for the Bulldogs at the NEISA Men's Singlehanded Championship and the Hatch Brown Memorial Trophy.

The Hatch Brown Memorial Trophy, a three division event hosted by MIT, was plagued by dense fog that prevented any attempt at racing on Saturday. As senior crew Kira Woods, who sailed B division with sophmore skipper Nicholas Marwell, so eloquently phrased Saturday's conditions, "there was no wind." A division sophmore skipper Shawn Harvey agreed with Woods, bemoaning, "It was a better weekend to be in a powerboat than a sailboat." Eventually the breeze filled in on Sunday at 1:30 pm, just enough time for the race committee to squeeze in the requisite three races in each division that would constitute the event a viable regatta. The light to moderate wind faired relatively well for the Bulldogs, who placed 4th overall with 58 points. Shawn Harvey was joined by sophmore crew Claudia Loiacono in A division. Junior skipper Dylan DiMarchi sailed with first year crew Catherine Webb in C division.

Senior Nic Baird was the sole Bulldog representative at the NEISA Men's Singlehanded Championship at Boston College. Baird, who has qualified for the national championship every year of his college career, including winning the event in the fall of 2017, unfortunately was just one spot away from being one of the top four to qualify. Baird placed 5th with 75 points. Although he is sad that his performance was not on par this year, Baird said he is ultimately happy Javier De Urdanibia Panos "beat me to take the last spot because he is a good-natured sailor with a promising future ahead of him." Baird also expressed excitement at the prospect of experiencing the Yale Alumni Regatta for the first time.
