Shining On Court And In Classroom
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sam Downey is making the most of his final year at Yale. Downey has played a big role in another strong season for the Bulldogs, who have won 11 of their last 13 games and sit at 5-1 in Ivy League play. He also has shined in the classroom, and as a result, has been named to the CoSIDA Academic District 1 first team.
Downey, who has started all 19 games, is among the Ivy League leaders in field goal percentage (3rd, .544) and rebounding (7th, 6.3 rpg.). He is a two-time Ivy League Player of the Week selection and has posted a pair of double-doubles. In Yale's 75-74 win at Brown, Downey scored 19 of his career-high 26 points in the second half. Against Temple, he grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds.
In the classroom, Downey has maintained a 3.42 grade point average as a political science major.
First-team Academic All-District™ honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third team All-America® honorees will be selected later this month.
Downey and the Bulldogs are back in action this weekend when they host Dartmouth and Harvard. Tipoff both nights at Lee Amphitheater is slated for 7 p.m.
