WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — Yale's lightweight eights' first mission was to secure a spot in this Sunday's grand final, but to do it they had to have a top-three finish in Friday morning's heat. The eight did just that, fighting all the way down the course and finishing in third to the Sprints' silver and bronze medalists, Princeton and Penn. These three crews will be joined by the top three finishers of the other heat, Columbia, Harvard and Navy, to compete for the National title Sunday morning.

Yale's coxed four were the next to race for their spot in Sunday's grand final. The coxed four racing is anyone's guess, as there is no fours racing through the regular season. Typically, crews split their second varsity personnel in any combination they please between the four-with-coxswain and four-without-coxswain. So as the Eli 4+ went to the line, no one had any idea of a speed order between the crews of Princeton, Columbia, Pennsylvania and Cornell. Yale got off the line a little slowly, trailing Penn, Cornell, and Princeton, and evenly matched with Columbia. A steady effort through the middle thousand pushed Yale up into a solid second, and then another strong finishing effort brought the Bulldogs within 0.1 second of the Tigers, with Columbia in third. Those three crews will be joined by Georgetown, Navy and Harvard in Sunday's final.

Yale's straight four was the final Y150 entry to race Friday morning. Their late charge was not enough to take back the lead from Princeton, Harvard and Pennsylvania, with a fourth-place finish meaning they will race in the Sunday morning petite final alongside MIT, Temple and Georgetown.
