NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bulldogs had a highly successful home meet, winning against both Vassar and Sacred Heart. Last year, Yale only beat Vassar by a single bout, but with a strong lineup and intense practices, Yale widened the gap between the two teams to defeat the Brewers 20-7 this time around. The saber squad had an especially strong showing, winning eight of their nine bouts against Vassar. Foil and epee also won the majority of their bouts, with squad scores of 7-2 and 6-3, respectively.
Yale did even better against Sacred Heart, finishing the match-up with a 22-5 victory. The saber squad went undefeated, foil ended with six victories, and epee contributed seven wins to the team's overall score.
Seven Bulldogs went undefeated at the home meet: Cameron Allen, Kevin Callahan, Earnest Chen, Nicolas Del Vecchio, Elijah Hong, Mati Zeff, and Andrew Zhang.
In between fencing Vassar and Sacred Heart, the Bulldogs recognized their graduating seniors and thanked them for their contributions to the team. Graduating this year are Arthur Befumo, Lance Chantiles, Skyler Chin, Daniel Flesch, Walter Musgrave, and Jonathan Xu. Each received a bouquet of flowers and a hearty round of applause when they were introduced. The crowd learned about the fencers' accomplishments both on and off the strip, as well as the Bulldogs' plans for after graduation.
After such an impressive performance at the home meet, the Bulldogs are eagerly anticipating the Ivy League Championship, which will also be held at Yale.
