4 Elis Hit Net, Kaczperski Makes 24 Saves

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bulldogs have a 1-0 lead in their ECAC Hockey best-of-3 first-round playoff series against RPI after registering a 4-1 win in game one tonight at Ingalls Rink.

The Bulldogs (14-13-3), the No. 6 seed in the tournament, outshot the Engineers (10-21-3) by nine and scored the first three goals of the game against the No. 11 seed.

Four of Justin Pearson's six goals have been against RPI. Yale's first-year left winger put the first tally on the scoreboard early in the second period when he took a feed from Joe Snively in the low slot and then slipped the puck under Owen Savory.

The Elis came out of the locker room on fire every time. They outshot RPI 12-4 in the first, scored early in the second and then added an early one in the third.

Ted Hart put the home team up by a pair when he fired a shot off the boards that bounced to the opposite side. The senior then flicked the rebound inside the right post 1:49 into the period.

Junior Corbin Kaczperski stopped 24 of 25 shots and a pair of advantages. The only shot that got past him was a 6x5 late in the game. He didn't see a lot of shots, but he saw his share of quality chances. The best one came late in the second period when Todd Burgess followed up a rebound with an open left half of the net. The netminder's stick seem to come out of nowhere (see photo) to stop the puck from crossing the goal line. That could have been a serious momentum changer.

The home squad added an empty netter off the stick of defenseman Chandler Lindstrand with 26 seconds left that clinched the contest.

"It's a brand new season," said Keith Allain '80, Yale's Malcolm G. Chace Head Coach. "Everyone is zero and zero… We had a good effort tonight and we've got to be better tomorrow."

Dartmouth, Union and Brown all won as home teams in the ECAC playoffs tonight. The Bulldogs and RPI square off in game two Saturday at 7 p.m. (ESPN+).
