Ivy Season Opens with Showdown
This one has been circled on calendars since they met in New York City for the 2018 league tournament title. Yale and Cornell, both ranked No. 3 and 4 in the latest major polls, meet Saturday at Reese Stadium in the 2019 Ivy League opener. The 1 p.m. face-off airs live on ESPN News.
Cornell leads the all-time series against Yale, 52-24-1, but the Bulldogs have taken 3 of the last 5 meetings.
The Red and Blue met twice in 2018. Yale took the regular-season game at Ithaca 13-11, but Cornell grabbed the Ivy Tournament championship game, 14-8. Jackson Morrill had 5 goals and Jack Tigh pitched in 3 combined for the Elis in the two meetings last season, while the Big Red had a 72-55 advantage in shots taken.
Yale beat Michigan 17-11 last Sunday in Atlanta's College Lacrosse Classic at Grady Stadium. The Elis (3-1), who have won three straight, had goals from eight different players and never trailed. Brian Tevlin had 4 goals and 6 points, Matt Gaudet hit the net three times and Jackson Morrill pitched in 5 points. TD Ierlan won 18 of 22 face-offs, including 14 straight, to ignite a Yale offense that registered a season-high goal output. His first-year backup, Joe Neuman, also got to show his skills while winning all nine of his face-offs.
Cornell (4-1), led by Ivy Player of the Week Clarke Petterson's 8 goals, erased a three-goal deficit against top-ranked Towson last weekend at the Crown Lacrosse Classic in Charlotte on the way to an 18-11 win. The Red beat Hobart, Lehigh and Albany before getting edged by Penn State at Charlotte.
