NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Two of Yale's more exciting games last year came against Quinnipiac and St. John's. The Bulldogs and Bobcats played a spirited scoreless tie in Hamden, while the Red Storm came to New Haven ranked 18th in the nation and escaped with a 2-1 overtime victory. The winning goal came on an own goal.
Yale gets another crack at those two opponents this weekend. The Bulldogs host Quinnipiac on Friday at 7 p.m. at Reese Stadium and then travel to St. John's on Sunday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
Yale (1-1) had two players – Max McKiernan and Max Morice - named to the Ivy League Honor Roll on Monday. McKiernan scored the game-winning goal in the 2-0 season-opening victory against Central Connecticut. It was his first career goal. Morice, a freshman, also tallied his first goal in the win.
Quinnipiac (0-2) hasn't played since a 5-0 loss at No. 16 Boston College on Sept. 1. Nils von der Heide has the Bobcats goal. Quinnipiac was selected to finish seventh in the 2011 Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Bobcats, who finished the 2010 season 4-11-2 overall (3-6-1 NEC), return 12 players from last season. Top-scorer and assistant captain, Philip Suprise, who finished the 2010 campaign with five goals and one assist, has led the Bobcats in goals scored and overall points in each of the last two seasons.
St. John's (2-1) is ranked 25th in the nation. The Red Storm, who host Harvard on Friday, has posted back-to-back shutouts – 3-0 over William & Mary and 1-0 over Boston University. Connor Lade, who anchored a defense that yielded only three shots on goal in those shutouts, was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Week. Dave Masur is in his 21st season as the head coach at St. John's.
