NEW HAVEN, Conn. - On the first day of competition at the Giegengack Invitational, which featured a smattering of events from around the track, the men's track and field team put up strong finishes in the high jump and the distance medley. The Bulldogs competed against teams from across the region, including Sacred Heart, the University of New Haven, and Quinnipiac.
Junior Mike Koller took first place in the high jump, blowing away the competition with a jump of 2 meters, .02 meters higher than his third-place jump at the Harvard-Princeton meet last weekend. Sophomore Keith McCord finished fourth in the event, and sophomore Cody Clements took sixth.
In the only throwing event on the schedule for Friday, senior Luke Persichetti took third place in the weight throw and sophomore Marcus Downs took fifth. Persichetti will compete again in the shot put today.
The Yale distance medley team - freshmen James Lewis, Jonathan Ascher, Austin Stoner and Armstrong Noonan - edged out St. Joseph's for the first-place finish with a time of 10:09.12. The 200-meter dash was the only other track event in which the Elis competed on Friday. Senior Chandler Crusan placed fifth in that event.
Competition continues today at Coxe Cage with the majority of the track events and several more field events. Results and a full recap will be available tonight.
