NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Six members of the Yale men's track and field team qualified for the NCAA East Preliminaries, which will take place May 25-27 in Lexington, Kentucky. Qualification is based on the season-best marks of each athlete in their respective event, with the top 48 in the region qualifying for the regional preliminary meet. The results of the Prelims determine who advances to the quarterfinals and, eventually, the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Senior James Randon qualified to the East Prelims in the 1500-meter run for the second year in a row, and is the Bulldog to watch heading into the meet. Last season, Randon advanced to the NCAA Championships, where he placed eighth in the nation in the 1500-meter finals and earned All-American honors. This season, Randon set the Yale record in the 1500 and notched the third-best time in the NCAA with a time of 3:37.93 earlier this week, nearly 5 seconds faster than his time in the NCAA championships last season. He will be the fifth seed in the event at the East Prelims. Joining Randon in the 1500-meter run will be sophomore Trevor Reinhart, who himself has had an outstanding season. Reinhart's qualifying time came at the West Point Twilight meet last weekend, where he placed second with a personal best time of 3:44.52. His time has improved consistently over the season, and he holds the 23rd seed heading into the East Prelims.
Senior Marc-Andre Alexandre has qualified for the East Prelims for the second year in a row in the 400-meter dash. Alexandre has only competed in the individual 400-meter dash once this outdoor season - at the Ivy League Championships, where he took first place with the third-fastest time in Yale history and was named Track Athlete of the Meet. He was also part of the Bulldogs' record-breaking 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams this season. His mark in the 400-meter dash at the Ivy League Championships earned him the 29th seed for the Prelims.
For the second year in a row, junior Paedyn Gomes qualified to the East Prelims in the 110-meter hurdles with his wind-aided personal best of 14.00 seconds, recorded at the Ivy League Championships. Over the course of the season, he placed first in the event in three meets and took second place at Ivy Heps two weekends ago. He is seeded 23rd in the event.
Sophomore Austin Laut also qualified for the East Prelims for the second year in a row in the pole vault. Laut notched first-place finishes in the first four meets of the season, and his seed mark of 5.11 meters places him as the 32nd seed in the East Prelims. The Bulldogs' final qualifier for the East Prelims is junior Adam Houston, whose time of 14:11.12 in the 5000-meter initially fell just outside of the top 48 qualifying times. However, due to scratches, Houston will have the chance to compete in the East Prelims as the 47th seed.
More information about the meet, including the schedule, will be posted as it is available. The full list of qualifying athletes posted by the NCAA is available here.
