Bulldog Honors Announced
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The 2017-18 Yale women's ice hockey team gathered for the final time in the Schley Room at David S. Ingalls Rink for the annual team banquet. In addition to celebrating a season that included making the ECAC Hockey Tournament, the Bulldogs honored the winners of the team awards.
Mallory Souliotis and Kaitlin Gately each earned two awards. For Souliotis, that included the Big Dog Award, for blocking the most shots. She shared the Most Valuable Player Award with first-year forward Greta Skarzynski. Gately won the Bingham Award for leadership, which she earned while serving as the team captain during the 2017-18 season. She also won the Richard H. Brodhead '68 Award as the player "who has contributed significantly to the success of the team while excelling academically".
Souliotis finished her season with a team-high 20 assists and 24 points, rounding out a stellar career with 70 points from the blue line. She was named First Team All-Ivy, Third Team All-ECAC, and was named to the All-New England Team. She signed with the Boston Pride of the NWHL after the 2017-2018 season ended.
Gately had a career high nine points on the season while wearing the "C" on her kersey. She won the Richard H. Brodhead '68 award for the second straight year.
Skarzynski led the Bulldogs in points in her first season, collecting 26 points to go along with a team-high 14 goals. Her six multi-point performances paced the team and led to a Second Team All-Ivy nomination.
Senior Eden Murray earned the Mandi Schwartz Award, given for courage, grit and determination. That award is named after Mandi Schwartz '10 (1988-2011), the Bulldog center whose battle with cancer has inspired countless people.
Murray wrapped up her time as a Bulldog with 69 points in 97 games, finishing +16 in her career. She earned the Mandi Schwartz Award for the second year in a row.
First-year goalie Gianna Meloni took home the Wendy Blanning Award, given to the most improved player on the team. The award is named after Wendy Blanning '78 (1956-76), who died as she was about to enter her junior year. It was established by her teammates.
Meloni had a solid first year with Yale, finishing with a 6-6-1 record to go along with a 2.06 goals against average and a .924 save percentage. Her 5-0-0 record in January, along with three shutouts, earned her an ECAC Goalie of the Month award. She finished the season named to the ECAC All-Rookie team, as well as an All-Ivy Honorable Mention.
Lucy Burton, a first-year forward, earned the Coaches' Award. The honor is given by the staff based on work ethic, attitude and commitment to the core values of the Yale women's ice hockey program.
