NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Eight members of the Yale women's swim team will be traveling to Greensboro, N.C., this week to compete in the 2018 US Winter Nationals. For these eight Bulldogs, it will be their first long course meet of the season.
The Bulldogs will have three representatives in the freestyle events. Junior Kendall Brent, a consistent force for Yale in distance freestyle events, will be swimming the 800-meter, 400-meter and 1500-meter freestyle. Sophomore Nathalie Eid will join Brent in the 800-meter and 1500-meter freestyle.
In addition to the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly, first-year Raime Jones will also be competing in three freestyle events: the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle. Jones is coming off an 11th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle at the Ohio State Invitational. One other first-year, MaryKate Buckley, will be joining Jones at the Winter Nationals. Buckley will be competing in the 100-meter breaststroke,. She, like Jones in the 200-yard freestyle, placed 11th at the Ohio State Invitational in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Destiny Nelson will be the sole senior for the Bulldogs at the Winter Nationals. Nelson competed well at the Ohio State Invitational, finishing 14th in the 200-yard breaststroke and 19th in the 200-yard individual medley. In addition to those two events in meters, Nelson will also swim the 400-meter individual medley and the 200-meter backstroke. Sophomore Cate Sawkins will also swim the 200-meter backstroke.
Junior Lili Margitai will join Nelson in the 200-meter individual medley. Margitai will also compete in the 100-meter butterfly. In the 100-yard butterfly, she placed 17th at the Ohio State Invitational. Fellow junior Bebe Thompson will compete against Nelson in the 400-meter individual medley. Thompson, following an 18th-place finish at the Invitational in the 200-yard butterfly, will also compete in the 200-meter butterfly.
The Winter Nationals will kick off on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
