NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Two weeks removed from an excellent showing at the Bulldog Invitational, the Yale women's tennis team is prepared to host an even larger event-- the ITA Regional Championships. Last season, the event took place in Philadelphia, with players from more than 20 Northeastern teams partaking, including all eight Ivy League teams. The Championships will take place over six days, starting on Thursday, October 11th and concluding on Tuesday, October 16th.
The 2017 tournament was a success for the Bulldogs, with Samantha Martinelli reaching the semifinals before falling to No. 1 seed and eventual winner Gabriela Knutson of Syracuse. She also advanced to the third round of the doubles draw, playing with graduated senior Elizabeth Zordani. Amy Yang registered two victories in the singles draw as well.
The Bulldogs are coming off an encouraging weekend in which they were able to flash their talent with excellent performances in singles and doubles. The new faces on the team were especially impressive. First-years Jessie Gong, Raissa Lou and Kathy Wang were all stellar, as was sophomore transfer Caroline Dunleavy. The ITA Regional Championships will provide an invaluable opportunity for the team to gain some additional exposure against some of the best players in the country. Dunleavy, Gong, Lou, Martinelli, Wang and Yang are all slated to play in the singles main draw, while Yale will be represented in the doubles main draw by two pairs, Dunleavy/Lou and Gong/Martinelli.
Play begins at 10 am on Thursday with the qualifying singles draw.
