The Ivy League released its list of student-athletes selected for 2018-19 Academic All-Ivy honors in its spring sports, and 10 Bulldogs were selected. The 10 thrived in their sport and in the classroom, as starters or key reserves on an officially recognized varsity team with 3.0 or better cumulative grade point averages. Each Ivy institution nominated five men and five women from its eligible student-athletes.
Senior shortstop Simon Whiteman (Trumbull, Conn.) of the Yale baseball team has been named first team Academic All-America. The honor was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. This is the second straight season that Whiteman has received this award.
Third baseman Mason LaPlante (Allen, Texas), who emerged as one of the Yale baseball team’s top offensive and defensive players in his first season, has been named to Collegiate Baseball’s Freshmen All-American Team. The newspaper announced the selections Wednesday.
Three Yale players were selected on the third day of the Major League Baseball Draft Wednesday, as first baseman Griffin Dey (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) was picked in the 23rd round by the Detroit Tigers, right-handed pitcher Scott Politz (Austin, Texas) was picked in the 29th round by the St. Louis Cardinals and left-handed pitcher Kumar Nambiar (Larchmont, N.Y.) was picked in the 34th round by the Oakland A's.
Shortstop Simon Whiteman (Trumbull, Conn.), the captain of the Yale baseball team, was selected by the San Francisco Giants with the ninth pick in the ninth round (266th overall) of the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday. He was the first Ivy Leaguer taken.
Six seniors were honored by the Yale Athletics Department with awards at the annual senior student-athlete reception Saturday afternoon at the Lanman Center in Payne Whitney Gymnasium. Trey Phills (Charlotte, N.C.) of the men’s basketball team and Kate Zendell (Suffern, N.Y.) of the women’s cross country and track and field teams were the recipients of the Ford Student-Athlete Community Outreach Award. Carrie Heilbrun (Fairfax Station, Va.) of the women’s swimming and diving team and Simon Whiteman (Trumbull, Conn.) of the baseball team were the recipients of the Kiphuth Student-Athlete Distinction Award. Shelby Kennedy (Vail, Ariz.) of the softball team and James Kochanski (Colorado Springs, Colo.) of the men’s soccer team were the recipients of the Meyer Humanitarian Award.
Simon Whiteman, a Rhodes Scholar candidate who captained the Yale baseball team, has been named the recipient of the 2019 William Neely Mallory Award, the most prestigious athletic award given to a senior male at Yale. The award was presented at today’s Class Day exercises by athletics director Vicky Chun.
