3-2 Win at RPI Moves Yale into 1st Place

DeMontis Gets 3rd Goal of Weekend

TROY, N.Y.  – Road points in conference play are crucial right now for the No. 20 Yale Men's Hockey Team. The Bulldogs came away with a pair tonight by skating past RPI 3-2 before a big crowd that moved them into a first-place tie with Cornell in the ECAC standings.

Three Yale forwards hit the net and junior Corbin Kaczperski stopped 30 shots to give the Blue its 10th win of the year.

Yale (10-7-3, 8-4-1 ECAC) found the net first with 1:08 left in the opening period after some great chemistry with the fourth line. Mitchell Smith won the battle for the puck behind the RPI net, skated out to make a backhand pass to Will D'Orsi, who moved it across for Dante Palecco. The sophomore winger one-timed D'Orsi's pass for a 1-0 lead.

The Engineers evened things before the first intermission, but the Elis got one back midway through the second when Robbie DeMontis notched his third of the weekend with assists from Tyler Welch and Joe Snively. That 2-1 lead stood through the end of the period despite a 5-minute power play by the home team.

RPI pulled to within one but could never get another equalizer. Kaczperski, who survived the long penalty kill and two minutes of 6-on-5 hockey to end the game, made the big saves when needed to notch his 5th win of the year.

This was the 42nd Big Red Freakout, so the home team wore its road red jerseys and Yale had white ones… For the third straight game, captain Anthony Walsh was unavailable due to injury. Charlie Curti, Ted Hart and Joe Snively served as assistant captains… Joe Snively's 3-point weekend moved him up to 127, one ahead of Sean Backman '10, for 12th place on the Yale career list. His 73rd assist (11th) moved him in front of Dan Poliziani '82.
