Bulldogs Host Villanova at 1 pm
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The 2019 Yale Men's Lacrosse Season begins Saturday at 1 p.m. with Villanova coming to Reese Stadium. The game, pitting the defending national champion Bulldogs against the 2018 NCAA Tournament qualifier, airs live on ESPN+.
Yale and Villanova have split the two meetings. The Elis won 16-11 at Philadelphia in 2017 before Villanova grabbed a 10-9 OT decision last year at the Patriot Cup.
A year ago, the Bulldogs and Wildcats opened the season at Frisco, Texas, in the Patriot Cup. Despite a great showing by Ben Reeves, with 4 goals and 3 assists, and 8 saves by Jack Starr in his first collegiate game, Villanova found the net with 20 seconds left in overtime to win, 10-9.
Yale won its first NCAA Lacrosse Championship after taking the Ivy League regular season title. The Bulldogs, who won a school-record 17 games, had 6 USILA All-Americans and the winningest senior class, including 6 MLL draft picks, in Yale lacrosse history.
Matt Gaudet had 4-2-6, Brendan Rooney hit the net 5 times and Jackson Morrill pitched in 5 assists when Yale scrimmaged at Syracuse on Feb. 2. The Elis used four different goalies who combined for 24 saves. Matt Brandau had 4 goals and Thomas Bragg chipped in 3 in the Feb. 9 scrimmage at home with Merrimack.
Villanova opened the 2019 season on Feb. 2 with a 17-7 loss at Penn State. Jimmy Gabrielsen had 2 goals, Nick Testa played all 60 minutes and had 10 saves and Zack Ornstein and Dan Fisher combined to go 10-27 from the X.
