Varsity Eights Racing For Cayuga Cup

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale's only home race of the spring is set for Saturday. And it will be a big day at Gilder Boathouse. In addition to facing Cornell, there will be a celebration of 45 years of women's crew at Yale. The first race is set for 8 a.m., and the varsity eights will race for the Cayuga Cup at 9:30 a.m. The Yale heavyweights also will be in action, facing Dartmouth starting at 8:15 a.m.

"The Cornell race is one of our oldest cup races, so it's fitting that we race them on the day that we celebrate 45 years of YWC," said Will Porter, The Friends of YWC Head Coach of the Bulldogs.

It's been another successful spring for Yale, ranked eighth in the nation in this week's CRCA-US Rowing poll. The Bulldogs are coming off a sweep of Columbia and Penn last Saturday afternoon at the Ivy Invitational after racing No. 6 Brown in the morning.

Cornell opened its spring season last weekend, facing Columbia in the Ivy Invitational morning session and Princeton and Harvard-Radcliffe in the afternoon session.

Following the racing, Yale's illustrious history will be celebrated. There will be a boat dedication to honor 45 years of YWC and a brunch that will feature speakers from each of the four decades – Joyce, Frocks Nett '79, Mimi Wright '86, Serena Flaherty '99 and Taylor Ritzel '10.

"History is an important part of Yale and our sport," Porter said. "No collegiate women's rowing program has more history than YWC, easily considered the pioneers of Title IX. The strength of the current program is built upon the effort of all the women who have pulled an oar for Yale in the past."
