  • Lainoff Given Spirit of Sport Recognition

    Yale senior Lillie Lainoff has been given the USA Fencing Spirit of Sport recognition.
  • Kamber Elected Captain for 2017-2018

    Rising senior Ilana Kamber has been elected to lead the Yale women's fencing team in the upcoming 2017-2018 season. A three-year starter on the women's saber squad, Kamber has been an integral member of the team since her first year. She qualified for NCAA Championships, the highest level of collegiate competition, as only a freshman. And success has continued to follow her. She lost a mere four bouts of 17 in the opening meet of her sophomore year and finished her junior-year season with a very solid winning record.
  • Schmiede, Miller Share Nellie Pratt Elliot Award

    Frances Schmiede, one of the most decorated middle distance runners in the history of Yale women’s track, and fencer Katherine Miller, an All-American who represented Brazil at the 2016 Olympics, are the recipients of the 2017 Nellie Pratt Elliot Award, the most prestigious athletic award given to a senior female at Yale. The award was presented at today’s Class Day exercises.

  • Fencers Celebrated at Banquet

    At the end of season celebration banquet for Yale women’s fencing, fencers were recognized for their performances and contributions to the program. The biggest moment of the night was when team captain and senior epeeist Katherine Miller was presented with not only the Sherry Macy Award for her tenure as captain, but also the Sada Jacobson Award for excellence in the sport.
  • Winter Academic All-Ivy Announced

    The Ivy League released its list of student-athletes selected for 2016-17 Academic All-Ivy honors in its winter sports today. Ten Bulldogs were recognized. They were starters or key reserves on an officially recognized varsity team with 3.0 or better cumulative grade point averages.
  • Yale Ends Season as Tenth in National College Fencing Poll, First Time in Nearly 20 Years

    For the first time in nearly 20 years, Yale women’s fencing has finished the season ranked in the top 10 of the National College Fencing Poll (CollegeFencing360.com Fencing Coaches Poll). At no. 10, they finish directly behind Temple and St. Johns.
  • Miller Leads Bulldogs at NCAA Championships

    Five members of the Yale women’s fencing team competed for the last time this season at the 2017 National Collegiate Fencing Championship. Captain Katherine Miller led the team, finishing eighth in epee.

  • Yale Sends Five Fencers to NCAA Championships

    This Wednesday, five members of Yale women’s fencing will travel to Indianapolis for the NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Notre Dame and Indiana Sports Corporation. They will compete in a field of the top 72 female collegiate fencers in the country on Saturday and Sunday at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
  • Five Bulldogs Qualify for NCAA Championships, Most in Over a Decade

    Today the NCAA announced the participants in the 2017 NCAA Fencing Championships, held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Only 24 fencers from across the nation qualified for each of the six events (men’s and women’s epee, saber, and foil). Five members of Yale women’s fencing qualified based on their results at NCAA Regionals as well as their overall season record.
  • Bulldogs Shine in Unprecedented Finish at Northeast NCAA Regionals

    Yale women’s fencing dominated at home this weekend, with six fencers making it to the final pool of 12 in their respective events. More fencers qualified for the final round of regionals than any season in recent memory.

    This Saturday, sophomore epeeist Lucy Friedmann represented Yale at the 2017 Junior Olympics in Junior Women’s Epee. She tied for 37th. Her finish is especially impressive given the large competitive field of 208 fencers.

    On the second and final day of the Ivy-League Round-Robins, Yale women’s fencing finished in fifth place. The Bulldogs’ overall record was 1-5.
  • Bulldogs Complete First Day of Ivy-League Round-Robins

    On the opening day of the Ivy League Round-Robins, Yale women’s fencing fought its way to a 1-2 finish. The day opened with a loss against Princeton, the current no. 1 in the NCAA. After losing a heartbreaker to Cornell, 14-13, Yale rallied to beat Brown 21-6.

    At Yale women’s fencing’s home meet this Saturday the team swept the competition, with the Bulldogs soundly beating Vassar 22-5 and Sacred Heart 20-7.

    This Saturday, Yale women’s fencing will compete in its only home meet of the season, against Sacred Heart and Vassar. This will be the final home event for the four Bulldog seniors: team captain and epeeist Katherine Miller, epeeist Olivia Briffault, and saber fencers Lillie Lainoff and Joanna Lew.

    Yale women’s fencing will take the strip once again on Sunday for the Brandeis Invitational. This will be the team’s last meet before Winter break, so the Bulldogs will look for a strong performance to carry them into their packed tournament schedule next semester.

    On November 5, Yale Women’s Fencing will travel to the University of Pennsylvania to compete in the Elite Invitational, which will serve as their season opener. Yale is slated to fence against six other schools. Most of Yale’s opponents have twice as many members on their team, so it will be a test of willpower and stamina for the Bulldogs to make it through the long day.

    The Yale women’s fencing team will add four freshmen to its roster this year – Michelle Li, Michelle Nam, Sam Wood and Anna Zhou.     Brazil’s women’s epee team, which included rising Yale senior Katherine Miller, concluded competition at the Olympics with a hard-fought loss in the round of 16 against the Ukraine, 45-32, Thursday.
