Play At Howard Friday, No. 15 Georgetown Sunday

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale kicks off the 2018 season with a weekend trip to Washington D.C. The Bulldogs face Howard on Friday at 7 p.m. and then have a Sunday afternoon date with nationally ranked Georgetown. There is no video available for the game at Howard, but fans can follow on live stats. HoyaVision has the pay-per-view video of Sunday's game.

Here are some notes on the trip:

  • Yale returns two first team All-Ivy selections from a year ago. Michelle Alozie was a unanimous selection and also was named the Ivy League Offensive MVP. Junior Noelle Higginson earned first team recognition as well. She scored four goals, which was second on the team, and in Ivy games, played 625 of a possible 659 minutes.
  • The Bulldogs have won two straight season openers and have started the year with a victory in eight of the last nine years. There have been some memorable openers, including a 1-0 win at UConn last year and a 1-0 victory over Penn State at home in 2010. The only season-opening loss during that stretch came to Arkansas in 2015.
  • Head Coach Rudy Meredith begins his 24th season at the helm of the Yale program this weekend. He is the winningest women's soccer coach in school history with 217 victories and has guided the Bulldogs to three NCAA Tournament appearances (2002, 2004, 2005). Last fall Meredith was selected as the New England Coach of the Year by the New England Soccer Journal after leading the Bulldogs to an 11-4-2 overall record, the most overall wins since 2007. In addition, Yale was unbeaten (6-0-2) at home for the first time since 2005 and finished third in the Ivy League with a 4-2-1 record.
  • The Bulldogs are playing at Howard for the second straight season. Last year, Keri Cavallo and Aerial Chavarin scored in a 2-1 Yale victory.
  • Yale is playing at Georgetown for the first time since 2013. The Bulldogs and Hoyas have only played twice and each team has one victory.
  • Two former Bulldogs – Meredith Speck '15 and Carlin Hudson '18 - are playing professionally for North Carolina Courage in the National Women's Soccer League. The Courage are in the midst of a memorable season. They have a 16-1-5 overall record. The 16 wins ties the the U.S. professional women's soccer record for regular-season victories. Two regular-season games remain for the Courage, who are two points away from setting the NWSL regular-season points record (55) and four goals away from becoming the highest-scoring team in league history.

The Bison, playing its home opener, already has two games under its belt – a 2-1 overtime loss to Cleveland State and a 2-0 win at Youngstown State. Jasmin Miller, who scored in both games, was named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Week, while defender Kendall Macauly earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Howard was picked to finish third in the SWAC preseason poll.

The Hoyas (1-0-2) will be playing their fourth game of the season when the Bulldogs visit on Sunday. Georgetown, ranked No. 15 in the nation, is coming off a scoreless tie with No. 11 Duke on Thursday night. The Hoyas opened the season with a 1-0 win over Georgia and then played a 1-1 draw with Virginia Tech. Georgetown is the two-time defending Big East Tournament champions.
