Kennedy Tallies Four Hits In Doubleheader
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale was at its best with two outs in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with Sacred Heart. The timely hitting earned the Bulldogs a 4-1 victory over the Pioneers and a split of the two games. SHU won the opener 2-1.
Shelby Kennedy had four hits and scored two runs on the day, and all four Yale pitchers saw action and were effective.
Miranda Papes and Nic Conway combined to limit the Pioneers to four hits in the second game. Papes drew the start and tossed four innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four. Conway then went the final three innings, striking out four and yielding three hits to earn her first career save.
Yale used some small ball to add another run in the fifth. Kennedy singled, stole second and moved to third on Annie Tarte's infield single. After Tarte stole second, Phylicia Wilkov put down a perfect squeeze bunt, which scored Kennedy.
Sacred Heart pulled within 2-1 with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Bulldogs answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Both scored with two outs. Katie Tews, who had singled, scored the first run on an error, and Olivia Vinyard delivered a clutch single to drive home the fourth run.
Yale outhit the Pioneers 9-4.
The first game featured good pitching from both sides. Jerpbak went the first four innings for Yale, allowing just two hits, while striking out four.
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Hailey Desrosiers's RBI single gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
Desrosiers, though, again came through for Sacred Heart. Her double to the left-centerfield gap drove home the winning run in the seventh.
Kennedy was 2-for-4 for Yale.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to return to Ivy League play on Saturday when they play a doubleheader with Columbia starting at 12:30 p.m.
