GREENSBORO, N.C. — Five swimmers from the Yale women's swimming and diving team competed at the 2018 US Winter Nationals on Friday.
In the first event of the day, junior Bebe Thompson swam the 400-meter individual medley. Thompson placed 34th in the prelims, touching in 5 minutes and 8.64 seconds. Senior Destiny Nelson was scheduled to compete in the event, but, instead, only competed in the 100-meter backstroke on Friday. After placing 20th with a time of 1:03.37 in the prelims, Nelson improved on her time on the finals, swimming the race in 1:03.37. She placed 19th overall.
First-year Raime Jones competed in two events on Friday: the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly. Jones placed 32nd in the in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:06.09, and 36th in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:02.98. Junior Lili Margitai joined Jones in the 100-meter butterfly, swimming the race in 1:03.34 and finishing 43rd. Only four seconds separated Margitai from the second-place finisher in the event.
In the final women's event of the day, first-year MaryKate Buckley finished 16th in the finals of the 100-meter breaststroke. Buckley posted very similar times in the prelims and finals, swimming a time of 1:11.38 in the morning and 1:11.68 in the evening.
