HANOVER, N.H..- The Yale Bulldogs had a busy start to the Dartmouth Invitational on a day that saw them play 11 total matches, 8 of which came against the Dartmouth Big Green and 3 against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
The Bulldogs first took on their Ivy League rivals, ultimately winning 3 matches and losing 5. First-year Samantha Martinelli, coming off her sensational run at the ITA Regional Championships, kicked things off with a loss to Dartmouth senior Kristina Mathis, a tight match between the two that saw Martinelli fall in a third set tiebreaker 7-4. This was a rematch of their thriller at the Bulldog Invitational, where the rookie Bulldog beat Mathis in a third set breaker, with this match featuring the opposite result. Matchups between these two will be something to watch for when Dartmouth and Yale face off in the spring.
Amy Yang and Sonal Shrivastava both took care of business, each winning their singles matches in straight sets, Yang winning 6-4, 6-3 and Shrivastava 7-5, 6-1. The rest of the Bulldogs' singles matches were close contests; Senior Elizabeth Zordani lost in two tight sets, 6-4, 7-5, while Captain Sunday Swett lost 7-5, 6-2.
The Bulldogs picked up their third victory of the day in doubles, as Swett and Martinelli won an intense doubles match 7-6(6) against Dartmouth's No. 1 doubles team, Kristina Mathis and Racquel Lyn. Shrivastava/Zordani and Yang/Amos both fell on the losing end of their doubles matches against the Big Green.
To conclude the day, the Bulldogs played 3 doubles matches against the Golden Gophers. Swett and Martinelli teamed up again to win No. 1 doubles 6-2, Yale's lone victory against Minnesota. Swett and Martinelli were an impressive pairing today and showed excellent chemistry, something that Yale will look to capitalize on in the spring.
After a solid first day, the Bulldogs will look to continue their success at the Big Green Invitational on Day 2, when the ball is set to drop at 2:00 p.m. in Hanover, N.H.
