NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The ITA Regional Championships continued earlier Saturday afternoon despite tumultuous weather canceling consolation play in the morning. With six players in action, it was a busy day for the Bulldogs, with two of their stars advancing to the round of the 16.
Raissa Lou, Jessie Gong, Kathy Wang, and Amy Yang were all unable to register victories during second round play. Lou gave a top ten seed in Penn's Marta Kowalska a run for her money in one of the day's best matches, playing three tight sets but ultimating losing 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Gong, Wang and Yang all fell in straight sets to ranked opponents.
Caroline Dunleavy and Samantha Martinelli were both excellent, winning two matches a piece to book spots in the round of sixteen. Dunleavy dominated in her first match, dropping one total game in a straight sets victory over Army's Caroline Vincent. The next match was a bit toughter, with Dunleavy gutting out a second set tiebreak to win 6-1, 7-6(8) to set up a showdown with Maya Jacobs of Rutgers. Martinelli had two straight sets victories, beating Salma Zouti of Drexel and then Devon Jack of Brown, who was seeded in the top 20. She will take on Princeton's Claire McKee in the next round.
