NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale women's tennis team picked up one of their best wins of the season on Saturday, beating No. 35 Columbia in a 4-3 comeback thriller to move to 2-0 in Ivy League play.
The Lions got off to an early lead on the afternoon after claiming the doubles point. They won the No. 1 and No. 3 matches 6-2 and 6-4 respectively. The No. 2 match, which was knotted at 5 games all, did not finish as a result.
Columbia continued to build their lead with a straight sets victory in the No. 5 match and a three set victory in the No. 6 matchup. With the Lions up 3-0 and one match away from victory, the Bulldogs staged a dramatic comeback. Raissa Lou gutted out a first set tiebreak before winning a straightforward second set, cutting the lead to 3-1. Samantha Martinelli continued to chip away, winning the second and third sets in tiebreaks despite dropping the first set 6-1. First year Jessie Gong leveled the score at three all with a straight sets victory, winning the first set in a marathon tiebreaker 12-10. With the win on the line, sophomore transfer Caroline Dunleavy won a roller-coaster three set thriller 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to seal the comeback.
The Bulldogs will look to carry the momentum from this victory into tomorrow, when they host Cornell at 1:00 PM.
